Google is being accused of being “woke” with a new Christmas ad featuring a “non-binary” beauty influencer.
The online ad for Google Shopping shows rising TikTok star Cyrus Veyssi searching for skin care products with the Google service.
The ad attracted backlash online after conservative and construction commentator Oli London shared it, along with a critical headline.
“Google launches WOKE Christmas campaign featuring a man dressed in women’s clothing complaining about his skin,” London wrote of the ad.
In the ad, Veyssi appears in make-up and women’s clothing and complains about dry skin.
“This winter drought is not it. Especially when I have so many holiday looks to shoot. Thankfully, I know just that,” says Veyssi while searching for products on Google Shopping.
“Moisturized skin is a gift for everyone. No need for wrapping. Happy holidays to me,” says the influencer, as the Google Shopping logo appears on the screen. The ad was also shared by Veyssi’s Instagram account.
Veyssi, 30, has been featured in several media outlets recently about the rise of social media influencers and co-hosts the Amazon Prime show, Influenced.
The content creator, who goes by the pronouns “he/him” and “they/them,” has amassed over 1 million followers on TikTok and Instagram by posting humorous videos about his family dynamics and promoting beauty products, according to Forbes, and which recently. did a cover on it.
Veyssi appears to have partnered with Google for a Google Shopping ad last December.
Other accounts quickly shared the new video and criticized Google.
RedState writer Bonchie mocked the ad, writing, “Google: ‘What should we do for our Christmas ad?'” Normals: ‘Maybe a family passing out presents around a tree?’ Google: “Sorry, the best we can do is a guy making fun of women’s clothing.”
A Google spokesperson told Fox News Digital that this post was just one in its broader campaign featuring dozens of smaller social media influencers.
“Everyone likes to find a good deal and save money. That’s why we’re promoting Google Shopping as the best way to do it. To put that in perspective, this was a single sponsored post on Instagram, representing a fraction of a percentage of a much wider Google Shopping campaign,” a spokesperson said.
Last month, luxury car brand Jaguar also faced backlash for announcing its new rebrand with an ad featuring androgynous models.
