ABC News “fully gutted” staff working in the third hour of its morning show “Good Morning America” - also known as “GMA3” – as part of work that were mandated by the Walt Disney Corporate parent, according to a report.
Catherine McKenzie, the executive manufacturer of “GMA3”, was issued as part of the dismissal that was notified by the chief of the network Almin Karamehmevic, according to the status bulletin.
ABC News employees described a gloomy atmosphere in the wake of mass holidays, with an employee showing the status that the cuts were similar to “a massacre”.
Another ABC News employee told the status that “is a very strange scene in the building – people crying and upset.”
“Many telephone calls in panic among employees trying to understand it.”
The restructuring, which included cutting nearly 200 jobs in ABC News and Disney Entertainment Networks, will result in the production team that poisoned “Good Morning America” taking over “GMA3”, reported reported status.
As part of these shifts, the executive manufacturer of “GMA” Simone Swink will oversee all GMA brands in all slot games, while Seni Tienabeso has been named ABC News Live and some specialized units.
Moreover, units with long forms like ABC News Studios, “20/20”, “Nightline” and “Impact x Nightline” will now operate under a single leadership structure, and digital and social operations will further integrate with news collection and other teams.
As the employees fought to process the unexpected cuts, one staff summed up the situation, saying, “It is all to do more. That’s what this is.”
The uncertainty and work pressure on the network television were compared to the “squad game”, with an employee you noticed, “You just feel like you have done it at seventh level of ‘squid games’ at this point if you have survived.”
The employee added: “I don’t know if you have watched the ‘squid game’, but they put you in teams and they put you against each other. And then they simply look and it’s brutal. And then even the people who win the price in the end … They are so unhappy. This is literally on the TV network.”
Other prominent managers who were cut include Cindy Galli, an executive manufacturer in the ABC investigation team who has focused on history for government fraud, corporate corruption and consumer advocacy.
Zach Toback, vice president of news and non-fiction production and studio operations on ABC News, was also given boot, by status. Toback had been with the network since 1995-that he left for a short two-year blow to NBC News before returning to ABC News in 2011.
Toback’s portfolio included resource surveillance on several ABC news platforms, including “GMA”, “World News Tonight with David Muir”, “The View”, “20/20” and “Nightline”.
Its dismissal is considered important given the fact that Toback played an integral role in the relocation of ABC news operations to the new Robert A. Iger building in Manhattan’s Hudson Square section, according to status.
The extension also claimed roles in the ABC News Studios as well as the digital department, which lost about 30 staff, the newspaper reported.
This includes 15 data-driven news site employees, Fivethirteight-Blogu, which was founded by Nate Silver and won by Disney Subdiary Espn in 2013. In 2018, the site moved under the corporate sister ABC News.
Over the years, Fivethirteight became known for his detailed voting, predictive models and deep statistical immersion, especially in sports elections and analytics.
However, in 2023, Disney ceased most of Fivethirteight staff, and Silver left. The site was finally reduced and integrated into the ABC News, losing much of its independent identity.
Karamehmedovic informed the Fivethirteight team about their vacation during a short virtual meeting on Wednesday, just hours after announcing wider work cuts throughout the network.
The 15 staff members had already learned about their completion the night before through a Wall Street Journal report, but Karamehmedovic offered no further explanation during the call, by status.
Reading from what seemed to be a scenario, he thanked the employees for their work, refused to get questions and soon ended the meeting.
Soon, employees lost access to ABC News systems, and Fivethirteight’s website was taken off the line, marking the unexpected end of the site.
