Wikipedia co -founder Larry Sanger is calling on Elon Musk and the Government Efficiency Department to consider whether government actors have infiltrated into online encyclopedia that he helped begin over two decades ago.
“Hello @elonmusk. Co -founder of Wikipedia here. Can you ask you to determine which branches of the American government – if any! – Have they paid employees to modify, monitor, update, diluted, etc., Wikipedia? Such operations should be distributed, if any. If there are none * *we would like to know. I agree? “Sanger recently wrote on X.
Sanger, who left the organization in 2002, has been a serious critic of Wikipedia since 2005, when he says the website began to move to left -wing prejudice.
“I like to call herself its founder now because I want to distance myself from it,” Sanger Fox News Digital told him.
Sanger says the website has long abandoned its neutrality policy, which he helped develop early.
The “neutral point of view” policy, which Wikipedia says is still one of its guidance principles, means that the content presented on the website is “fairly represented, proportional, and, as much as possible, without editorial bias”, as defined by Wikipedia itself.
“Neutrality means you can’t tell what position a person takes on the topic,” Sanger Fox News Digital told. “Anydo of the controversial issues raised by the topic of the article, you can’t tell what position they take. Almost no Wikipedia article these days is raised to that level.”
Sanger said he could see the evolution of the website when viewing articles like global warming, which he said was once displayed fairly but now appear biased.
“More and more of the positions not approved by the institution began to be minimized and ultimately rejected essentially and even demonized as the years passed. By 2015, 2020, he was fully awakened,” he argued.
He argued that there is a liberal rotation when looking at articles on political figures as well.
“If the candidate is a Republican, then the worst points are extracted. The best points are minimized. If the candidate is a democrat, then it is a puffy piece, in essence,” he said, mentioning the page in Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
With the aim of the new Trump administration to handle waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government, Sanger sees a major opportunity for Doge to take another look at Wikipedia.
He believes there is evidence to raise questions about the potential impact of the government on the website and warned that it can have a foreign influence from China or Russia as well.
“So I just want to know what the hell they did there,” Sanger Fox News Digital told. “It seems to me that this is one thing to be discussed.”
“I really want the heat to be in government and on Wikipedia to get this kind of behavior in hand,” he added.
Musk, who has long been a critic of Wikipedia, seemed acceptable to Sanger’s request.
In a subsequent tweet for President Trump who has withdrawn over 35 million views, Sanger asked Trump to write an executive order banning federal workers and government funds from use to edit or pay for editing on Wikipedia.
“Good idea,” replied Musk.
Wikipedia did not respond to a comment request.
